Hofstede Culture Model Explained - Thiamine

Countries with high MAS scores are those in which the domineering, the high-achieving, and the heroic are rewarded with material riches and public recognition. Hofstede's dimensions were not postulated but found inductively. Each new study uses new respondent sets and different countries. Even if it used the same questions, these questions might have come to mean different things. So we should take dimension scores with a grain of salt. Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions National cultures can be described according to the analysis of Geert Hofstede. These ideas were first based on a large research project into national culture differences across subsidiaries of a multinational corporation (IBM) in 64 countries.

The Hofstede model of national culture consists of six dimensions. The cultural dimensions represent independent preferences for one state of affairs over another that distinguish countries (rather than individuals) from each other. The country scores on the dimensions are relative, in that we are all human and simultaneously we are all unique. Northouse (2016), identifies Hofstede’s “five major dimensions in which culture differ by: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, masculinity-femininity, and long-term-short-term orientation” (p 431). As you will read, every dimension presented is doubled sided to present a high or low side. The third dimension of Hofstede’s model describes the extent to which societies prize traditionally masculine traits such as toughness and assertiveness in public life. Countries with high MAS scores are those in which the domineering, the high-achieving, and the heroic are rewarded with material riches and public recognition.
